    Este libro se ha elaborado expresamente para incluir los contenidos de la primera parte de la asignatura Ingeniería de Máquinas y Transportes, que se imparte en el Máster de Ingeniería Industrial de la UNED. Está especialmente pensado para los alumnos de Ingeniería Industrial no Mecánicos, es decir, que no tienen conocimientos específicos de mecánica de máquinas más allá de los que se imparten en los primeros cursos del Grado. Es esta la razón por la que el libro se ha configurado en dos partes: una primera de fundamentos de diseño mecánico, y una segunda parte de diseño de los elementos de máquinas propiamente dichos. La primera parte se considera necesaria para que el alumno adquiera conceptos fundamentales para el diseño y dimensionado de elementos mecánicos, que son básicos para los estudiantes de Ingeniería Mecánica. En la segunda se ha desarrollado el cálculo de aquellos elementos mecánicos considerados básicos para el diseño de máquinas.
